Beautiful. Just so very beautiful! Make sure to look down off the terrace and see the stairwell tunneled into the rock face. That way you know to go check out those viewpoints too. So with the trip, but do bring rain boots just in case it recently rained. The terrace gets big, deep puddles you can't bypass.
Several incredible views accessible within 100m of the parking area, which are at the trail-heads of the web of paths around the area. The big rocks from which the views are accessible are too much for anyone who does not have rope and skill; but there is an easy set of steps going down from the center of the overlook to the very climbable rocks of many different sizes at the base of the bigger rocks, where there is heavy shade, "ice boxes", and serenity galore. And for those of you who spend enough time there, there is a small and hidden set of rocks that are perfectly sized for the youngsters or oldsters amongst us (use your orienteering skills to climb in from the highway bridge at the bottom of the mtn and you'll find it near the top). One final point: the drive back from the front gate, about 5km, to the parking area offers wonderful cross-country skiing when the front gate is closed during the winter.
This was a nice little spot that had a few hidden surprises. The design of the park and trails is well thought out, with plenty of stairs and large boulders for anyone to climb on. When you arrive to the overlook, the vista is absolutely breath taking. As you walk around this overlook, keep an eye out for a hidden ultra narrow and very steep staircase that tunnels through the overlook site. It was just wide enough for a person to fit through, and takes you to the base of the rock outcrop that creates the overlook, and to more hiking trails. It was very cool. Expect to spend as little as 30 minutes for the casual observer, to as much as a few hours for an experienced hiker wanting to hike the entire trail up or down.
This is the premier destination in the Allegheny National Forest. The boulders, hills, trees, well groomed paths combine to make this a destination not to miss. You spend just an hour or all day exploring.
Love this place and travel back to it every year. Nice wooded area for picnic and a great hiking trail with some breath taking views
